HELP proud to announce that we are a sponsor of Save A Life Walk San Diego 2009.
The walk is Sunday November 8th in Balboa Park. The purpose of the walk is to develop an awareness regarding mental illness and suicide: to educate the public on how we can work together to prevent loss of life to suicide.
Here are some startling and sobering statistics:
Â· In the U. S., a person dies by suicide every 16 minutes, and claims over 30,000 lives each year.
Â· In San Diego county, white males have the highest suicide rate of any race/gender combination.
Â· From 1998 to 2007, suicide took the lives of 3,248 San Diegans.
Â· For every suicide completed, there are 8-25 attempted.
Â· The fastest growing group completing suicides are is children ages 10-14.
Â· Among 15-24 year olds across the U. S., suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death.
Â· 60% of all people who die by suicide suffer from depression â the most treatable of mental illnesses.
Â· 90% of all who die have a diagnosable mental or substance abuse disorder or a combination of disorders at the time of their death.
Â· The U.S. Surgeon General states that suicide is a major preventable public health problem.
If you wish to participate, you can make a donation to support local outreach programs for suicide prevention. 100% of these funds stay in San Diego and support the organizations Yellow Ribbon and the Survivors of Suicide Loss, (SOSL) San Diego.
